Women’s Sports are Finally Getting Recognition

By Bridie Mccann

As a women’s student athlete, Chestnut Hill College has fulfilled all of my expectations. After only a few months here, the school has already given me new insights, one of which is a more accepting viewpoint on women’s sports. Women’s sports as a whole has surged in popularity over the last few years in both support and attendance nationwide.

For example, Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, on August 30, 2023, 92,003 spectators saw a volleyball match between the University of Nebraska and Omaha. This surpassed the previous record of 91,648 spectators for a women’s sporting event set during the UEFA Champions League in 2022. For female athletes worldwide, this was undoubtedly a steppingstone moment towards equal representation in sports.

I think it’s great that female athletes have become role models for women in general. In conversation, this is undoubtedly a subject I’m enthusiastic about. I look forward to advancing the popularity of women’s sports from my own playing and supporting the movement at large.
