Netflix’s new television show Avatar: The Last Airbender had a few doubts when the show first was announced when Netflix said that the original creators of Avatar would not be part of the live action version. Nobody has forgotten how bad the 2010 film of The Last Airbender was. Besides that, the live action show was amazing. In all, this show started off great.
The creators did an amazing job of telling the first season of Avatar. What I enjoyed the most about this show was that they did not copy and paste from the original animated version it was its own thing but still follows the original story but in its own unique way.
They added many different scenes that we did not get to see in the animated television show, including one of first scenes of the show when fire lord Sozin massacred the air benders, this was a fantastic way to show how ruthless the fire benders are. As well as showing characters that are not supposed to make appearances until later seasons for example fire lord Ozai in the animated version we do not see him until the first episode of the last season but in this one he had a crucial role in the first season same as Azula we did not see her character until the last episode of season 1 in the original and now in the live-action version we see her character and her upbringing.
Another thing that I liked about the show was that we got introduced to more of the past Avatars because the only one we got to know from the original was Avatar Roku, in the Netflix adaptation they talked more about Avatar Kuruk, and Avatar Kiyoshi which in the original Kuruk was only mentioned a few times. The best part about this show was the relationship between prince Zuko and Uncle Iroh, the scenes with these two characters in them were the best so far. The creators did a fantastic job of showing how these two characters have an extraordinarily strong bond with each other.
The one thing that I did not like about the show was that they cut out a lot of the side quest that Aang, Katara, and Sokka went on because of these trips that they took in the original version showed Aang’s character development, the main reason why he left the air temple was he did not want to be the Avatar he just wanted to be a normal kid and in the show they did not show this which I think was extremely important to the story.
In all, I believe that this show was great, and it redeemed itself from the first live action movie and it is a great watch, and I cannot wait to see what they do next in season 2 and 3.
