It is becoming part of how we communicate, create, and solve problems. However, one important topic that often goes under the radar is how AI is affecting our ecosystems and the environment.

Many people don’t realize that the systems powering AI require massive amounts of natural resources. According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, data centers — which support AI technologies — use millions of gallons of water every day. In fact, some estimates suggest that water usage can reach up to five million gallons daily, which is comparable to the drinking water needs of a town with 10,000 to 50,000 people in the United States. This raises serious concerns about sustainability, especially in regions already facing water shortages.

In addition to water consumption, AI systems also require a significant amount of energy. The computing power needed to train and run advanced AI models can be extremely high, sometimes comparable to the energy usage of small countries. As AI continues to grow, so does its environmental footprint, increasing carbon emissions and putting more pressure on global energy systems.

However, not all aspects of AI are harmful. AI also has the potential to help protect the planet. In an article by Nancy W. Stauffer from the MIT Energy Initiative, it is explained that AI can support cleaner and more sustainable solutions. For example, AI can improve the efficiency of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels. It can also assist in environmental monitoring, climate modeling, and optimizing energy usage across industries.

Ultimately, the impact of AI on the environment depends on how it is developed and used. Companies and leaders in technology have the responsibility to make decisions that prioritize sustainability. This includes investing in greener data centers, reducing water and energy consumption, and ensuring that innovation does not come at the cost of our planet.

AI is a powerful tool, but like any tool, it must be used wisely. As it continues to shape our future, we must also consider how it affects the Earth because protecting our ecosystems is just as important as advancing our technology.

By JP Lately, artificial intelligence (AI) has been making major moves everywhere from workplaces to classrooms, and even in our everyday lives.
